FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ASPSU Nears Voter Registration Goal of 2,000
Written by: Christian Aniciete and Fred Long, ASPSU
The Associated Students of Portland State University (ASPSU) and its Vote Coalition have been hard at work in registering students to vote for Oregon’s upcoming special election in January as they wrap up their voter registration efforts this week.
With a week left, ASPSU has shifted into high gear to maximize student voting. Katie Markey, ASPSU Interim Legislative Affairs Director, said “ASPSU is close to hitting our goal of 2,000 voter registration cards with 1,843 collected.” She added, “We hope to exceed that number of course by January when ballots are due.”
ASPSU’s voter registration work is part of a larger, statewide effort of the Oregon Student Association (OSA) and its Student Vote Coalition. OSA is a coalition of student governments in Oregon dedicated to the representation, service, and protection of the collective interests of over 100,000 students in postsecondary education. Registering 23,000 students last year and 22,000 in 2006, OSA has a proven track record of voter registration and engaging Oregon students nonpartisanly in the political process.
ASPSU’s totals numbered to 106 voter registration cards collected last week. Through the collective efforts of ASPSU representatives and student volunteers, ASPSU has actively contributed hours and hours of work participating in class raps, phone banking, and canvassing out in the Park Blocks. Since the beginning of the term, ASPSU’s Vote Coalition has collected 1,843 voter registration cards.
There are two key reasons students are putting in countless hours to ensure their peers are registered, in addition to the fact that no one else would be doing this important work without their efforts. The first reason is that it gains credibility with legislators. This has been a long-term strategy in the past decade to have a significant voting block of students, ensuring that legislators need students’ votes and have to pay attention to issues that directly affect students. In addition, the special election in January deals with state funds and could have a significant impact on tuition as universities are reliant upon state funding.
“Voting is about getting students to express their opinion and make their voices heard on issues that affect them,” said ASPSU Senator Eric Koppang. “ASPSU is non-partisan and we’re not out there telling students how to vote but why they should vote.’
ASPSU Vote Coalition volunteer Shannon Bender also added, “Students turned out in historic numbers to vote in last year’s election. We want to continue to keep students excited and involved in politics. And so far we’ve been really successful in registering so many students in such a short amount of time.”
ASPSU’S Vote Coalition will continue its registration efforts for the rest of the week before switching to non-partisan voter education and “Get Out the Vote” work starting in December. All ballots must be turned in no later than January 26th, 2010.
